Syria has been readmitted to the Arab League following more than ten years of suspension, imposed after a brutal government crackdown on anti-Assad protesters in 2011, which sparked the country's civil war. Foreign ministers voted on Sunday to allow Syria's return at a meeting ahead of the Arab League summit in Saudi Arabia, set for May 19.
Many in the league believe this to be a way toward resolving the crises resulting from the Syrian Civil War – including the flood of refugees to neighboring countries and drug smuggling across the region. But opinions diverge internationally.
