Without many in the outside world noting it, Ahmed Abdallah Mohamed Sambi, 48, known as the "ayatollah" won the presidency in the Comoros, an island country off Africa's east coast, with 58 percent of the vote. A Sunni Muslim, the title of ayatollah refers to his studies of Islamic political theory in Iran, after having spend time in Saudi Arabia and Sudan, plus his habit of wearing a turban. His opponents accuse him of being an Islamist, which he, of course, denies. "I am not ashamed to be a Muslim but our country is not ready to be an Islamic state and I will not make anyone wear the veil." We shall see. (May 16, 2006)
