Reader comment on item: Is There an Arab-American Race?

Submitted by Fernando (United States), Sep 10, 2007 at 21:45

Hispanic is not a race either. It is clearly defined by the US cencus as an ethnicity of Spanish origin or culture regardless of race. Also, race within Hispanic circles can not be defined by skin color so it has become a moot point to tie in skin complexion to race. For example, a person mixed with Amer-Indian may be white in color and features but identify themselves as Indigenous-American like the Mayo-mestizo of Northern Mexico. A Mexican with a dark complexion may be a multi-ethnic mix of Mediterranean and various other darker caucasian people and have no African or Asiatic background but present a brown skin type. Plus factor in the numerous ethnic and racial mixes within Latin America...Race can not really be determined for many Hispanics without a DNA test.
