in response to reader comment: TURK not Persianate

Submitted by Fred Meehan (United Kingdom), Jan 16, 2008 at 00:28

The total number of turks including the Azaris is 23% of Iran. Persians are the majority. Please check this information on the CIA site or wikipedia.

The Azaris in Iran used to be Persian before invasion of mongols followed by Turks. Recent DNA testing have shown they are closer to Persians in Iran than the Turks of Turkey. The Azaris have similarities to the Azaris in the Republic of Azarbiajan, however, the Azaris in the Republic are closer to the caucisans.

There have been so many intermarriages between the Persians and Azaris in Iran that any talk of partition etc will be rejected by the Azaris of Iran. The current leader of Iran, Ayatollah Khamenei, is an Iranian Azari.

There has recently a spate of attacks in YouTube, My space and other social sites by unknown agents to drive a wedge between various groups in Iran.
