I have gone both the titles years ago and visited makkah after that. Please,
Mr. Daniel Pipes do not call a book a scholarly work just because it happened to be of your taste. Academic works are too at times interesting to read.
Wolfe wrote his book for an entirely different target group. Wolfe is a fiction writer and he wrote a travelogue which had a touch of history since he had gone through few books on Hajj by Buckart, lawrence, Asad etc
You can not do a better blunder than comparing these two books.
