Words Are Like ArrowReader comment on item: The Problem with Middle East Studies Submitted by kamekish (India), Jul 16, 2008 at 02:29 Sir, I read your article with seriousness. I personally feel that the points, which you have quoted, may not be very serious to make you disturbed or give reason for you to write a separate blog. When you write an article, you can't control the way others interpret it. The same thing is true on even when you speak. The words are like an arrow coming out of bow. Once it is out, it will go in its direction and hurt or influence anyone coming on the way. So I personally feel that Daniel must focus on building ideas, creating ideas and propagating ideas. Leave interpretations on other trivial people. I do not agree that such counterproductive discussions can be the reason for failure of Middle Eastern studies in America. There can be many reasons for its failure. It may not be possible for me to list out all the various reasons for the failure but one point is certain that handling Muslims issue in this world is the most complicated social and managerial problems. This is bound to create animosity in even like-minded people. As per my view, after 9/11, things have switched in new direction, which paves the way for future. But lately, this direction appears to missing its track because of many reasons. America has achieved its biggest success in attacking Iraq but now some new ventures have to be tried and I feel that Obama is the result of these new feelings and comprehensions in the heart of Americans. The outcome is still in the belly of time. Yesterday, Obama used a very nice word. This is terrorist sanctuary. If Pakistan is a terrorist sanctuary, why Americans are still talking to provide military or non-military funding? These are the biggest dilemma. In this changing world, Americans must segregate its enemy. Obama must clarify, that if Pakistan is a sanctuary, why should be fund abc in Pakistan. It is true that Americans are not responsible to ensure that prosperity takes place in conservative societies. The people, who do not to remove the Burqua or backwardness from their society, will have to live a deprived and miserable life. What and why should Americans be responsible for it, unless that deprivation does not kill Americans? It is important for American intelligentsia to focus on the bigger issues and ideas. Fighting among themselves and cursing each other is not going to resolve future conflicts of Middle East. USA needs sound policies. kamekish Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes. Original writing only, please.
