America's roleReader comment on item: [Samuel Huntington and] American Purposes In Iraq Submitted by Joshua Siskin (United States), Apr 27, 2004 at 12:02 For a moment, let's consider being an American something like being a Jew.You know, throughout history, Jews have never sought converts. Although we recognize ourselves as God's treasure (aside: nowhere in the Torah are we called "chosen"), we have no desire to force our beliefs on anyone. That being said, we have finally learned after several thousand years of persecution how to protect ourselves. We have a nation-state, an army, guided missiles, and nuclear weapons. When we perceive a threat, we deal with it -- as in the case of Iraq's nuclear reactor and (if history repeats itself) in what could be the case of Iran's nuclear reactor, which would also have to be taken out. So, if America were to act like Jews/ Israel, how would it respond to Arab terrorism? It would not seek to convert the Arab world to democracy, but it would deal with the threat of militant Islam wherever it exists. Perhaps America should target murderous or threatening leaders and regimes -- as Israel targeted Yassin and Rantisi. Topple or send apache missiles in the direction of the leaders of Iran, Syria and, for that matter, North Korea. If similar leaders take their place, deal with them in a similar fashion. Keep doing this until sane leaders finally emerge. Just a thought. Your friend, Joshua Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
