Egyptians have Only Benefited from this myopic follyReader comment on item: Assessing the Egypt-Israel "Peace" Treaty, Thirty Years Later Submitted by james burke (Canada), Mar 26, 2009 at 09:26 Dr Pipes, The Egyptians ( Al Masri in arabic I think) have enjoyed this one way peace treaty more than Israelis 1) diminished threat of war - as long as the US Govt sends the "teat" money every year and the Euros kep coming for holidays and keep the factories open 2) No oil for Israelis - or very little even though Israel financed the establishment of oil wells after the '67 war 3) tourism - very little if any from Egypt; tourism is really a 1 way thing; Israelis and many kibbutz volunteers from US, Canada and Europe enjoy seeing the sphinx and pyramids 4) Israel popularity amongst Egyptians - the egyptians are more pragmatic than palestinians ( the egyptians were forced to be arabs after the unfriendly spread of Islam in the 7th century; snuffed out the indigenous pre-arab muslim culture) I HATE ISRAEL was a big hit song several years ago in Cairo and inter-commerce is limited to foodstuffs and textiles only having a marginal impact Israel must do somehing bold and become the bully that the arab world will not bother with; I do not see any potential for a great commercial exchange and either China, South America or India can supply what the Arabs want at cheaper prices. 5) Take back the Sinai - damn to h#ll what liberal MEPs say in Brussels or what the Demoncrats or Jimmy Carter say in Washington, Al Jazeera or elsewhere. That land mass of the Sini stocked with drones and advanced automatic high tech will protect Israel anfd Israel can threaten to destroy the Al aswan dam in Egypt - impossible to protect and its destruction will cause great numbers of eventual deaths and sickness among the Egyptians 6) Take over the oil wells Israel must be a sovereign nation - more than it is now to bring calm to the people of Israel Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
