Dear Mr Pipes

I read you are sure of the strong link betwen al-qaida and Sadam, yet you acknowledge the non -islamist nature of the regime. To me, this is very awkward, since I understand islamist do not like (in fact despise) the non religious nature of government like sadam's.
Also, I always understood we, the west (including the Americans) helped Sadam to stop the perceived threat of islamists in the 80's (Iran). Is this not the case?
