Israel Then - Israel Now - Nothing New Under the SunReader comment on item: When Israel Stood Up to Washington [in 1981] Submitted by M. Tovey (United States), Apr 7, 2010 at 13:20 The tone of history is sometimes scored with the music for which the harmony must be in tune, or it is just noise. One might suspect that just as American Vice President Biden (in his inimitable style) tried to impose some form of Haig-style restriction upon Israel, in doing so he merely sang the same old tune that the world has been trying have Israel play as well. No matter the arrangement, it is a song that Israel has not wanted to sing, nor should sing, for it has a bad melody and no one can truly keep its time. All simile aside, PM Begin did indeed have a moment, but as observed by a fellow reader, it was addressed to the wrong parties. Further, in this latest round of the American Administration attempt at foisting a peace solution that has no more chance than a snow cone on a hot Negev day of lasting, we see that the stakes are mounting still that has the peace process stretched to beyond any normal expectation of producing a result, so that at any moment, the overdue rupture will occur. It is thought here in the modern context that PM Netanyahu does not desire for an all out rupture of the process, yet it is his government that has that pressure being applied. But think, who else but the Israeli nation is going to lose anything of lasting national value if the pressure is not abated? The 'Palestinian' presence in the Middle East was not a national presence before World War 1; only after concessions to the Arab population in the region were made that a 'national' identity for the 'Palestinian' population was even a part of the demographics of the former Ottoman holdings. Yet PM Netanyahu is confronted, as were his predecessors, with trying to make 'living room' for the 'Palestinian' population, not merely of necessity, but for the political survival of his embattled nation. He knows though, as do those who truly understand that gravity of the requests (actually-demands) being made of Israel, that survival is exactly what is being threatened by such extreme requirements. So, then, the foretold rupture is forthcoming, for the impatience of those who have demanded Israel give up her sovereignty over historical Israeli lands is worn to the thinness of transparency, that a hatred for things of Israel is no longer veiled and the intentions are exposed. What is Israel expected to do and what Israel will be forced to rely on for help in this situation can be explained in the sole source for Israel's strength. It may be an old tune, but the song of Almighty God's love for Israel in the Holy Bible (see Solomon's Song) is still the best praise for His help, and in the end it is the only tune that will be heard in Jerusalem.
