Electric Shmectric: bah humbug.Reader comment on item: Islam's Key Quartet Submitted by Ing (United States), Feb 2, 2011 at 15:26 Yuval said: Renault-Nissan will roll out 115 000 new electric cars which feed off the grid, making oil-based fuel un-necessary. This is a typical media myth: that a shift to electric cars, with their plastic parts and new expensive materials and assembly line toolings, will magically make petroleum demand disappear. In fact, Rand concluded long ago that shifting to hydrogen cars, for example, would severely burden the grid and require the addition of something like 4 extra power plants to replace the output of every plant utilized to generate hydrogen. As about half the country's electricity comes from coal, these electric car cheerleaders are robbing Peter to pay Paul. So much for saving the earth! Not clear on how providing more revenue to Iran and Saudi Arabia will weaken them, but certainly a permanent denuking of Pakistan should have been priority one from day one. (I would make priority two leveling Pakistan into dust and glass, but I'll settle for number one.)
