Democracy is not a rational form of governmentReader comment on item: Anoush Ehteshami and Democracy in Egypt Submitted by Ralph C Whaley MD (United States), Feb 8, 2011 at 09:01 Every government is based on a moral code. In essential terms there are only two alternatives. Rational self interest or altruism. The first is the code for men to live on earth as human beings (rational animals) the second is the code of death for man. Democracy is not a step in the right direction. Democracy is a government of absolute majority rule. If 51% vote for any action of government there is no appeal. The first and only moral government in the history of man is the USA founded on the moral principle of INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS. Thomas Jefferson stated these rights as life, liberty and the pursuit of ones own happiness and that the sole purpose of the government is "to secure these rights govenments are instituted among men deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed'. Egypt's culture is so far removed from understanding these facts of reality that it is extremely unlikely that anything but another form of tyranny lies in its immediate future Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
