Former Soviet Union and the Middle EastReader comment on item: Democratic Iraq? Submitted by barbybg (United States), Mar 22, 2011 at 15:38 Does a thesis brought forth by the elder Pipes (Dr Richard) in relation to the Russian Revolution (and put forth in a book by the same name) hold true for the Middle East? He claims that where intellectuals are present to fan the flames of social discontent and where democratic institutions are absent, there will be revolution. Further, the end of such revolution is totalitarian. Reading the elder Pipes at this time gives context.
