Avineri gets it wrong again

Reader comment on item: Samir Kuntar, A Free Man Again, But for How Long?

Hamas' control of Gaza, and not Shalit's abduction, which is one of its consequences, is the strategic challenge facing Israel.

Actually it is not. It is the saving grace that keeps Hamas in control of Gaza, because then and only then can Israel resist the urge to decapitate itself by allowing Gaza Arab free rein to invade Israel

The real strategic challenge is actually the mirror-image of Kuntar's truthful remarks: The very presence of arabs west of the Jordan river. the presence of anything more than a token Arab population creates the illusion of a "palestinian" ethnicity and polity (both total bunk, according to Bashar's father Hafiz) and the delusion that constant terrorist pressure of Israel will induce Jews to flee to the diaspora in search of safety. Hamas is a pesky distraction, not a real factor.
