reason not to intervene in SyriaReader comment on item: Egypt's Palace Coup Submitted by Richard Stoecker (United States), Jul 1, 2012 at 16:13 What about the Russians? I have been assuming that the reason President Obama didn't want to get involved in Syria is that the Russians are helping President Assad. I hope that reason doesn't sound wimpy, but I think it makes sense. Douglas MacArthur was fired by President Truman because the former wanted to have an all-out war with Maoist China, although the greater reason for the firing may have been the need to remind General MacArthur who was President and who was not. It wasn't that long after WWII, and an all-out war with China would have been lengthy, self-defeating and might have started a nuclear war, for all we knew.
