The importance of Islam

Dr. Pipes' comments on the importance of Islam in defining the separated lives of Middle Eastern peoples should not be ignored. Residential segregation according to religion was the traditional pattern in all the lands of Islam--not, as former President Carter has suggested, a result of Israel practicing Apartheid. The tendency of Islamic immigrants to voluntarily "ghettoize" (in the sense of forming ethnic/confessional enclaves) in numerous European countries is further evidence of the strength of this tradition.
