Sudanese SoldiersReader comment on item: A Black Corps d'Elite: An Egyptian Sudanese Conscript Battalion with the French Army in Mexico, 1863-1867 Submitted by Majdi Makki (United States), Mar 27, 2014 at 18:11 Undoubtedly there's quite a misunderstanding in respect to the origin of these troops, and will remain a myth. The lack of genuine and reliable annals especially in the Egyptian archives unequivocally could have solved this matter. As far as I know, and from constant reading and investigation into the matter did not come across any notion which indicates that these troops where "Slaves", another verification that they were not a slaves, is how they were been rewarded upon them return from this battle. Sure this could refute the theory that they were slaves. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes. Original writing only, please.
