Reader comment on item: Violence in Turkey

Submitted by Kepha (United States), Jul 15, 2016 at 18:56

Any idea on who is behind the Turkish coup?

(1) Is this what is left of the Turkish military's "Old guard" trying to save the Kemalist legacy?

(2) Is this the Turkish military's "new guard" put in by Erdogan himself showing its frustration at Erdogan not moving quickly and effectively enough to re-Islamicize the Turkish state?

Daniel Pipes replies:

  1. It appears to be, yes.
  2. No, because the military controls its own promotions except at the very top.
