What alternative did Trump have?Reader comment on item: American Historian: Trump Does Not Look at the Muslim Brotherhood Like Obama; I Expect It Will Be Banned Submitted by Gene Taglia, Feb 12, 2017 at 11:48 I generally agree with Dr. Pipes' assessment, other than his disapproval of Trump's order temporarily prohibiting entry into the US of people from seven specific countries. While it could probably have been promulgated in a less objectionable manner and form, there really isn't any practical alternative if Trump wishes to keep terrorists and their supporters out of the US. The countries in question are either hostile to the US, or in a state of anarchy, so that if there is any source of information regarding who, or what these people might be, it is not available to US immigration authorities. The sort of prolonged, detailed questioning that Dr. Pipes suggests, even if it could be effective (which I doubt), would require an inordinate amount of time, a great deal of money, and numbers of highly trained personnel that don't yet exist -- making it impractical, other than for rather small numbers of people (and, even then, more expensive than its worth). The only problem with Trump's order is that his political enemies (including those in the courts) are misrepresenting it in an attempt to destroy him.
