Reader comment on item: When Politicians State "I Am" or "I Am Not" Something

Submitted by Charles Martel (United States), Mar 3, 2017 at 17:52

Probably no one better understands the cancerous rise of Islam these past forty years better than Dr. Pipes. Glance at a newspaper from the 1960s 70s or 80s and you'd be hard pressed to catch an article on Islamic extremism, let alone a headline story. Yet today, it is the horrid, violently dangerous wallpaper of our lives.

Last November we faced the same choice here that the UK confronted earlier in the year. Thankfully, we made the proper choice. Donald Trump, as president, is unwinding politically correct globalism at a furious pace. For this alone, all of us who favor the rights enshrined in our Constitution should breathe a sigh of relief. With Hillary in office, we would have continued down the politically correct path leading to the USA metamorphosing into France. This is why I find Dr. Pipes' stance on Mr. Trump so incongruous.

President Trump has certainly made his share of mistakes. From a strategic standpoint vetting foreigners based on nationality or religion as opposed to individual traits strikes me as one of his more flagrant examples. Yet, he's learning, evolving and growing into the job. As I see it, Trump passionately loves America and understands the concept of American exceptionalism 'down to his bones'. This is in stark contradistinction to both Obama and Hillary who each expressed a less patriotic viewpoint. Now that we're past the carnage of the election, I think perhaps its time to give Mr. Trump a chance to lead us toward greater security, prosperity and a commonsensical approach to dealing with the issues of our time. None, by the way, approach the existential threat of Islam; particularly in the guise of the Iranian nuclear bomb. Here too, I see President Trump as coming down on the right side of the equation.

In sum, I would ask Dr. Pipes to extend Mr. Trump a modicum of gentle (but not unconditional) support. Trump will make mistakes. But he will be operating from a worldview far more closely in line with those of us who treasure Western civilization than would have a venomous shrew like Hillary.

Daniel Pipes replies:

I praise Trump when he deserves it and criticize him when that's in order. I am deeply skeptical of his temperament and worry he will create a crisis for the United States. I hope he learns what it means to be president.
