Looks like this point has been borne outReader comment on item: Bush@U.N. Submitted by David Isecke (United States), Sep 18, 2002 at 15:08 As Cheney pointed out, sending weapons inspectors to Iraq will probably fail to find the weapons that are there, since it is too easy to hide them or move them around. Given this, it is clear why Hussein is willing to offer this access. And it seems that this ploy has worked. This most recent development will make it that much harder to convince other nations - or even the American people - that we need to remove this dictator.Furthermore, it gives him that much more time to build the chemical, biological, and perhaps nuclear weapons which will help him in his bid to grab more power in the region without fear of meaningful resistance. Perhaps a change in tactics is in order? Maybe it would be better to seriously arm and support his opposition within Iraq. Or perhaps if we wait, Saddam will make a mistake, and remind those of short memory why he needs to go. Either way, it seems in retrospect that the US should have made clear from the start that they would not consider the return of weapons inspectors to be a solution, and explained to the world exactly why.
