a common denominator?Reader comment on item: Middle Eastern Gyrations Submitted by Charles Martel (United States), Nov 13, 2019 at 23:10 With very few exceptions, North Korea being among the most egregious and well known offenders, internet-driven universal access now makes available so much to so many in ways never before dreamed possible. We are living in the midst of a social science experiment on a scale literally without precedent. One ponders if perhaps this new window, largely available even to those in dar al Islam might be contributing to the apparent decline in violent Islamism? Until now, Islam was presented as the answer to everything. And in the deliberate-by-design cloistered societies that held sway for more than a millennium the Islam-uber-alles argument was almost entirely without rebut. Dare one hope that for young, impressionable, predominantly male Muslims, perhaps something as diminutive as the iPhone may henceforth inspire a new light of reason to take root in soil until now darkened solely by the musty shadow of the Qur'an. Time, it seems, will tell.
