Jew vs. Arab, Jew vs. Muslim, Jew vs. Palestinian, Israeli vs. Palestinian, Hebrew vs. Heb., Jewish People vs. UmmahReader comment on item: Vanished American Words Submitted by Robert (United States), Jan 5, 2022 at 06:15 Dear Daniel, I think it is wonderful that you have chosen to explore the words that vanish from one's Vocabulary through Generational or Historical drift. And you have chosen to focus those changes through your lifetime (since you were born in 1949, according to Wikipedia). Of course, one can also explore those words which did not exist in the 1950's, like Wikipedia, Google, Social Media, Cell Phones (or Smart Phones), etc. Perhaps you'll consider that another time. My focus here, however, however is on the Jews, Israelis, Palestinians, Arabs, Muslims, Christians, etc., as these terms Shifted their meanings since the 1950's - an artificial date, unless one defines it has the lifespan of the Baby Boomers, of which you and I are a part of that now Senior Citizen Generation still alive. One's again, you are not focused here on the words which didn't exist way back then. Even though you did not ask for this here, I wish you to consider the Semantic Shift the meanings of words relevant to your field, which is the Study of the Middle East, particularly focusing on the "Center" of the Middle East, which I think is Israel and/or Palestine (depending on one's Religious, Political, or Ideological Viewpoint). Here is a Partial List of words which have significantly changed their meaning, as opposed to meaning vanishing regarding the above (in alphabetical order); some didn't yet exist. PS1: We are focused here on the English Language; this too is somewhat artificial[ it would be also interesting to do this in another language, particularly Arabic, which is your (Middle Eastern) focus. PS2: It would be useful also to include another Generation(s), subtracting merely 50 years, beginning with the ones of the 1900's. Abbas This is not a complete list.
