Make honest criticism of Islam your pastimeReader comment on item: The Ayatollah, the Novelist [Salman Rushdie], and the West Submitted by Prashant (United States), Aug 13, 2022 at 17:03 Dear Dr Pipes, Most of the modern human beings know that our religions are not perfect. Our religions are good guidelines for our conduct, but they are not inevitably correct. Muslims either do not understand that Islam is not perfect, or they refuse to admit the imperfections of Islam. Even more so, to maintain their political hegemony. Muslims try to severely harm those who criticize Islam. The fatwa against Rushdie and its execution by the Muslim attacker in New York was one example of this Islamic tendency. It is a noble duty of all humans to desensitize Muslims against criticism of Islam. If all of us --all humans-- criticize Islam honestly and politely when it fails to measure up to our standards, Muslims will have no choice but to get desensitized about the criticism. The goal is to make honest criticism of Islam so commonplace that Muslims demand for murderers and terrorists who are willing to die and kill for Islam exceeds the supply that Islam can garner. Muslims need to learn that defending Islam at all costs is more expensive than letting it be and survive on its own merits. I openly and firmly state today that I hold poor Islamic tendencies responsible for the attack on Rushdie. I believe that Rushdie does not deserve the attack that he got. I also believe that Islam and Muslims must change their attitude to be good citizens of the world. This incidence has reduced my respect for Islam and increased my respect for Rushdie.
