Let's tackle "political correctness"Reader comment on item: Two Years of Intifada Submitted by Destin (United States), Oct 3, 2002 at 02:51 Dr Pipes, we are living in an era of extreme political correctness, in which all views and religions are given a brainless Oprah Winfrey sort of stamp of acceptance. It has been easy for Islam to stifle any examination and free debate in Islamic countries and now its proponents are seeking to shield it from scrutiny in the West too. The saddest part is that western liberal intellectuals, while espousing freedom and individal liberty, don't have the inclination or the courage to tackle Islam. Why are we so afraid? ... We in the West must stand up for our values and not be afraid to say what we feel is wrong. It is grotesque and inhumane to amputate limbs or stone women to death-----if Islam allows it, then we must openly say that these practices are wrong and we will not allow them to be followed in our society. Why are we so paralysed with political correctness? Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes. Original writing only, please. Reasoned disagreement is welcome but not comments that are scurrilous, off-topic, commercial, disparaging religions, or otherwise inappropriate.
