In other news, I think it is important that someone should call attention to the rapidly deteriorating situation regarding the issue of Iran's nuclear proliferation efforts. This is all severely worsened and rendered orders of magnitude more complex due to the involvement of Iran in the war in Ukraine, and I wonder if the author has personally pondered the following possible ramification. Iran's alliance with Russia is deepening. As the author pointed out, this could make Ukraine and Israel into formal allies. But conversely, it could also induce Russia to repay the Iranians with a gift of their dreams. A nuclear bomb.
It seems to me that the public both in the United States and in Israel, is stunningly unaware of the precariousness of this situation, the imminent necessity of a strike, the possibility that due to the current developments it may soon be impossible to deal with the Iranian nuclear weapons program absent a complete effort at regime change (the effect of which upon the nuclear program itself may be rendered into question). Even more appalling and alarming, is the fact that contrary to recent indications that the Biden administration was beginning to formalize a military alliance with Israel against the Iranian threat, in the last week they have taken a rather perverse step in the completely opposite direction. Immediately following an Israeli airstrike against Iranian drone assets, which are of critical use to the Russians in Ukraine, the administration was quick to blurt out to the press not only that Israel was solely responsible, but also that the country is merely being self-serving, and not doing enough to help Ukraine. Meanwhile the Secretary of State , in his remarks in Jerusalem last week, seemed similarly, blissfully unaware of reality, pointing out to the Israeli PM that "Ukraine is fighting for its existence." Yes, in some ways that is so. But in so many ways, although no bombs are currently dropping, the same is even more true of Israel. Given a nuclear weapon, Iran will not hesitate to first vitiate Israel's defense doctrine, and then use the weapon itself. To emphasize the total disconnect of the administration from the severity of this situation, they repaid Israel for its actions against the Iranian drones with a very appropriate gift yesterday. A removal of sanctions pertaining SPECIFICALLY to the Russian government's nuclear cooperation with the Iran via Moscow's Rosatom corporation.
The fact that the national security community writ large is blithely indifferent to all of this, creates a situation in which this White House operates with a free pass, and is not subject to any of the public accountability or pressure, that the situation warrants. It seems that former "neo-Cons" have an outsized influence over the administration's actions. Accordingly, it would seem especially useful for them to take stock of this situation. Respectfully, it would be most useful, if people who have secondary influence, over that community, would discuss such issues, either publicly or in private.
