The Bible has led more than one Islamists out of extremism

Reader comment on item: Working out the Counterterrorist Kinks

Submitted by Mark James (United States), Dec 25, 2005 at 16:26

It is a shame that incarcerated Jihadists are not given Bibles, because one
Islamist, Tawfik Hamid, said that what made him eventually reject extremist
beliefs was his having read Matthew 5:7-9:
Before leaving college, he carried two boxes of books -- all espousing jihad --
into his yard. He poured gasoline over the pile and set it on fire. A healed mind,
he felt, could rise only from the ashes of hate. While he watched the blaze, he
remembered reading the Bible on his own in high school, and the words that
had so moved him. "Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God." "Blessed are the
peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God."
