Cant understand Mr. Lewis' conclusion

After a typical brilliant and interesting essay, the ending leaves me flat.

He seems to argue that Islam had a free society model, but different from the Western version of later year,which worked well until destroyed by intervention of the French,Nazis etc.

But how can we possibly give them back that system and for sure our democratic system isnt working over there (Irak, Afghanistan)

The only immediate answer is in fact , dictators, no matter how corrupt they are, friendly to the West

The deposal of the Shah of Iran was a disaster for the West-if only USA had maintained their backing!
