Pre-emptive War on Iraq

Reader comment on item: Should Israel change its system of gov't?

Submitted by Philip W. McLarty (United States), Nov 13, 2006 at 07:57

I have enjoyed reading your opinions and gleaning from your insight. But, on this installment, I couldn't disagree more strongly.

The essence of my disagreement is with the central thesis, that it was right to pre-empt Saddam Hussein. I'm aware of the atrocities and the extravagances, but think with me: When is pre-emptive war justifiable? And if you can make a case for it, why not with Iran, North Korea or any of the tribal states of Africa, where genocide is taken for granted?

No, I think we made a serious error declaring war on Iraq without any provocation or threat to our sovereignty. Given that mistake - and our failure to admit it - everything else is an attempt to make the best of a bad situation.
