Syria's cooperationReader comment on item: Signal to Syria: Straighten Up Submitted by TruthTeller (United States), May 14, 2003 at 11:03 "But the illegal imports continued and even grew. In reaction, Washington not only didn't penalize the Syrians, but soon dropped the entire subject."Well, let's hear the rest of the story (as Paul Harvey would say). It is my understanding that this issue was dropped because Syria then started to cooperate with the U.S. to track down and capture Al Qaeda operatives located in and around Syria. Since then Syria has seemed to be cooperative on this issue only, that of Al Qaeda. I believe the article should have pointed this out. Furthermore, since the level of cooperation from Syria is, at this time, not particularly encouraging, it behooves the administration to drop the facade that Syria is a willing partner in the fight on terror and act immediately if Syria is to get the message.
