Response to KurtzReader comment on item: [Middle East Studies:] Wasted Money Submitted by Peter G Jones (United States), Jun 24, 2003 at 10:05 Kurtz is dead on the mark. Said is a dangerous influence, not a typical of the bizarrely counter-productive anti-body forces active in US culture. The question is: WHY are such people so powerful in directing policy that actually subverts the national interest of the United States?...It also reminds me of the stubborn, inexplicable refusal of too many people in this society to inform themselves to any extent about the threat posed to us by Islam. Goethe's Faust speaks tellingly on this point: (Charles Passage translation, Part Two, Act V, ll 11575-6: Freedom and life belong to that man solely/Who must reconquer them each day We are being challenged, unremittingly, and failure to respond appropriately invites disaster.
