Beyond the PaleReader comment on item: Turkey's Radical Turn? Submitted by Brad Reed (United States), Aug 6, 2003 at 10:03 So: a military that has overthrown several democratically elected governments in Turkey and has been the source of countless human rights abuses is a forces of "moderation"??? ... I know how difficult it is to accept, but Turkey's government abstained from allowing us to use their land in the Iraq war due to the immense public pressure against it (I believe the percentage of Turks opposed to the second Gulf War was around 80% or higher). This is, frankly putting it, democracy. A military making decisions against the will of the people is most certainly not.
