Israel caused Oslo to failReader comment on item: [An Israeli] Withdrawal Won't Work Submitted by Cameron Parrett, M.D. (United States), Apr 25, 2002 Mr. Pipes' prescription for an indefinite occupation by Israel of the Palestianian West Bank and Gaza Strip "until Palestinians and Arabs have proven themselves willing . . . to live harmoniously with [Israel] for an extended period" completely ignores the arrogant and ongoing Israeli expansionism represented by government-supported and defended "Jewish settlements" in the occupied territories. No amount of rhetoric can obscure this aggression on the part of Israel. There can be no other interpretation of this behavior than as a manifestation of Israel's goal to permanently expand its borders to the Jordan River on the east and to the Mediterranean coast on the southwest. The Oslo accords failed because Israel refuses to accept the concept of an independent and autonomous Palestinian state. Barak's "unprecedented concessions" never included removal of Israeli-maintained Jewish settlements in Palestine.
