Reader comment on item: Has Israeli Deterrence Been Restored?

Submitted by Rebecca Moulds (United States), Sep 21, 2007 at 12:12

Although not privy to the chambers of the Israeli Knesset, I can only determine from what I have read that there seems to be an attitude from the Israeli government of disregard for its citizens' safety and future. Appeasing the enemy doesn't work, as the world found out to its horror, when some of the Western governments tried to appease Hitler before the start of WWII.

Two different situations that could occur are: By appeasing tyrants and megalomaniacs that make up most of the dictators of this world, this will bring about a temporary peace and stability to a region, while all the time the dictator is laughing all the way to the bank, so to speak. But by using force where and when necessary, the evil is stopped in its tracks, although at a price few are prepared to pay.

That is only one problem the world faces today; people who live in free societies are unwilling to be courageous enough to sacrifice their time for serious action, preferring to compromise their freedoms and pursue their happiness just for the moment. Ehud Olmert and all in the Israeli government will pay heavily for their mistakes, albeit seemingly peace-oriented, but if they took a harder line toward their enemies in the first place, their future would be more secure.
