Positing A Notion: Israel As A "Protectorate;" For Their Own Good, Of Course. "A Good Thing"Reader comment on item: Will Annapolis Renew the "Peace Process"? Submitted by mariana (United States), Oct 11, 2007 at 12:10 Thank you RJP for an excellent recapitulation of the history most of us who follow this pathetic soap opera can appreciate. One wonders why the government of Israel lacks even short term memory. I think a good case can be made that Israeli's lack the intelligence, and the ability to reason and remember required to govern themselves and hold their "Holy Land". Almost 50 years of "Defense" against a duplicitous and implacable enemy appear to have taught them - nothing. After each existential war Israel has been forced to fight and conquer, whenever finally achieving defensible borders, they've consistently given up the same fought-over territories, putting themselves back into jeopardy [each time with their enemies massively retrained and rearmed with more lethal weapons]. Is there a pattern here? This nihilistic state of denial the Israeli public inhabit, has threatened to bring the rest of the world to the brink several times, and yet, Israelis continue to elect people like Olmert, Peres, Barak, and [the Sainted] Rabin [who, while perhaps a brilliant general, never quite got the hang of "negotiating", having had a nervous breakdown over his {short-lived} realization that his Arab "interlocutors" were not "negotiating in good faith"]. Each and every round of "negotiations" [and precipitous government unilateralism] has shrunk Israel's land mass, allowed hostile armies closer to its borders, and exposed more of the population to devastation.... yet, still Israelis do not learn. Ehud Barak decided that unilaterally returning the territory in S. Lebanon held as a buffer [which enabled the IDF to protect Lebanese Christians and Israelis as well], was "a good thing". Yes, of course it was "a good thing" for Syria [as it facilitated their ability to colonize, arm, assassinate and undermine the Lebanese government]. It was also "a good thing" for Iran, which has colonized with and armed Hizbullah in S. Lebanon with rockets and ever-more-advanced weapons, now able to reach most of Israel's vital areas. Last summer also, taught Kadima and Israelis - nothing; another "negotiation," another "peace agreement" and where are the 3 kidnapped IDF boys for whom Israel went to war last summer? The return of the buffer territory to S. Lebanon was demonstrated to have been such a success, that Gaza was deliberately [Did anyone actually "deliberate"?] abandoned and turned over to gun-toting savages. The Israelis [turned refugees] who were forcefully removed from their Gaza homes of 30+ years, have still not been resettled into decent, comparable housing more than 2 years later. Decent "Palestinian Arabs" in Gaza [assuming there are some], live unemployed in poverty, filth and squalor, living with open sewage ditches, uncollected garbage, subjugated by armed animals with absolutely no limits. "Freedom Fighters" shoot guns gratuitously and at the children of rivals; they've patiently waited in front of schools for the arrival of the children of "rival factions" whom they murder [to make a point?]. Those few "Palestinian Arab" children actually attending schools instead of running the streets, are being mentally abused and massively indoctrinated with fulminating hatred to prepared for the "martyrdom" their teachers all personally eschew. Yes, I can see that forcefully, unilaterally abandoning Gaza was "a good thing". Now, we see evermore splendid negotiations: Negotiations to end all negotiations. Tony Blair, Condi Rice, Peres, Barak, Olmert, Livni and "the Quartet," with Saudi Arabia writing the libretto, have decided that, beginning with E. Jerusalem and West Bank settlements, more Israeli refugees should be created, more "buffer lands" [no longer Holy?] should be turned over by "the usual suspects" to ever-better-armed and more successful enemies, creating new borders which have already been proven insecure; and we're convinced this will be "a good thing". WE WILL HAVE PEACE IN OUR TIME! How can such a people govern themselves? Israelis are having so much more fun pretending that they have a nation and that it has serious, competent, incorrupt leadership to think, act and "negotiate" for them. When these paragons of virtue and ability prove otherwise, Israelis vigorously and vociferously appoint "Commissions" which, after having allowed sufficient time to pass so the fools will forget, assure them that: even though a,b,c,d,e,f,& g have been corruptly and incompetently and illegally done, the "perps" should not be removed from office. "All's well that ends well." I'm sure Saudi Arabia, the Emirates, Iran and the rest of the rich oil producers will be happy to pay for land to exchange [unless your expert "negotiators" can talk them out of this too]. Maybe AhmediNejad has a good idea. Perhaps, an un-populated bit of north-central Canada and an adjacent bit of Alaska could be purchased for a new "Holy Land;" after all, if the West Bank and E. Jerusalem are re-definable and expendable, "geography" shouldn't matter much. If the land is selected carefully, at least the rest of the Civilized World won't be dragged down into conflagration. Relocated and surrounded by [mostly] non-hostile neighbors - for their own good - Israel should thrive as the "Protectorate" of two [moderately] adult nations - or better still - perhaps Israel should be a Protectorate of the UN. mariana Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
