This would neatly account for the denial mechanism of choice, Conspiracies Against Me and My Like-Feeling Friends.

Once that was introduced as a socially-acceptable and not-forbidden form of conjecture, the public discourse was poisoned, twisted, spun in a seriously deranged orbit... any time anyone came near to further disturbing left-leaning liberals they could easily retreat into "It MUST be a cabal... There MUST BE hidden payoffs for hidden agendas..."

Excellent piece of detective work. Now if we were allowed to learn of The Thief in the Night, long-denied with damnable heresies introduced by clergy...
