Judgment or Coincidence?Reader comment on item: Did Divine Intervention Fell Ariel Sharon? Submitted by Roy Weinberg (United States), Dec 30, 2007 at 17:31 Interestingly, about the same time that Sharon was withdrawing from Gaza (in conjunction with the Bush administration's foolish "land for peace" policy with the Palestinians) Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans and devastated that city. Was that a mere coincidence or was it God's judgment on the United States for coercing Israel into giving away land to its sworn enemies? Robertson may have been a bit presumptuous in his declaration that Sharon was felled by the hand of God for acquiescing to a terrible US policy that wrongly believes that trading land brings about peace. And yet for those self-styled "religious experts" who angrily denounced Robertson as a cruel publicity-seeking blow-hard who was after some TV ratings, they need to consider that throughout the history of ancient Israel, God often cast judgment against those who threatened the Jewish nation. Like myself, Robertson believes that Israel is a special nation that was promised to the Jews by God and to no one else. And like myself, Robertson believes that the Messiah will return soon to reclaim that nation for his own and destroy the enemies of Israel. For many Jews and Christians who claim to believe in God, Israel is no more than a proverbial wart on a camel's backside that needs to be lanced and disposed of in order for "true peace" to prevail in the world. To these folks, devastating hurricanes that strike nations that fail to recognize Israel's sovereignty over its own land are mere "coincidences" of no significance and catastrophic illnesses that strike political leaders who cave in to the misguided politics of world leaders ignorant of Islam's true intentions are just the result of "bad luck".
