U.S. Assumes Iraqi Govt. ResponsibilityReader comment on item: Must U.S. Taxpayers Pay for Iraqi Electricity? Submitted by Richard H. Shulman (United States), Mar 29, 2008 at 17:04 Pipes #843 of 3/15/08 makes an interesting observation that the US spends its own money and efforts helping Iraq furnish electricity, but electricity is out for hours. Mr. Pipes suggests that Iraq assume responsiblity for running and paying for itself. That would be desirable. Can Iraq do it? If not given US civilian subsidy, would Iraq stop the theft of its oil, whereby the jihadists finance their war while depriving Iraq of needed funds? How much effort does the US military give to protecting Iraqi oil? Should it do more? I'd like further discussion of this point, it is an important one.
