In the April 25, 2008 update, a single sentence caught my eye:

" . . . .Haq forced his way into the federation offices and opened fire."

In March, I attended an evening's entertainment in a local synagogue. Before entering, I noticed the presence of armed security guards just inside the door. In one way it was gratifying to know that we were being taken care of, but in another way, also a little worrying, as it was a comedy routine with two Arabs and an Israeli Jew. If something like this required armed security guards, perhaps all public and private places, not just synagogues, should adopt this habit when special events take place.

In late 1980 Manila, there were so many terrorist bombs that most public places had armed guards and metal detectors at the entrances. It is a sad twist of fate that our own country's security issues are still in their infancy. Having lived in third-world countries, two of them Muslim, has made me more aware of the threat of terrorism when one least expects it.
