The truth must get outReader comment on item: Islamists and the Left Working Together in Muslim-majority Countries Submitted by Rena Cohen (United States), Apr 21, 2009 at 10:33 Perhaps the leftists need to be reminded (once again) that their alliances with the Islamists have resulted in their own slaughter in the past and will likely do so again in the future if radical Islam takes hold in any country which they call home. Also, it is one thing to carry on in favor of cultural relativism when it is a matter of blaming Israel, or their own governments, for the numerous ills of the world. It is quite another thing to be told that they personally will now assume the burkah, quit drinking, and observe Sha'riah or die. These alliances can be countered, but only if the planned "life" that Islamists have in mind are made palpably clear--otherwise, those who are obviously either completely ignorant of history, or willfully ignoring it for their own political purposes, proceed with justifying and glorifying and romanticizing elements which are not just, glorious, or romantic in the least, attracting gullible youth as they go. No doubt this is one of the reasons why Islamists are so interested in seeing any "disrespect to Islam" banned from public parlance. If life as a Gazan woman subject to the tender mercies of the Hamas regime in Gaza, for example, began to get serious coverage and traction, things might get a bit difficult for Islamist entities like Hamas to keep finding useful idiots in the West to front for them. On the subject of fronting, clearly the left learned nothing from having fronted for Stalin and for the USSR -- only those who suffered in the communist "prison of nations" knew what was really going on, while the privileged Western leftists continued to insist, as did Stalin, that life was getting better and better. I'm sure a similar trend was seen in Iran (one has only to read the rather meandering and rather spineless "Reading Lolita in Teheran" to get a sense of how very, very little the leftist intellectuals really understood about the Khomeni agenda and how "refreshed" they all felt about the "revolution" -- until he began hanging them in the public square, of course.) - R Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
