I'm confounded by Dr. Pipe's predictionsReader comment on item: Predicting Iraq's Bleak Future Submitted by Charles Martel (United States), Jul 21, 2009 at 17:33 Although I agree with Point 1 (we will get out of there in pointless defeat more quickly than under McCain or other GOP), I didn't see a reasonable victory plan with reasonably available resources. Point 2, although I HATE Obama and most of what he stands for, even I can't blame him for something like Iraq that he inherited. If he gets out as quickly as consistent with "not a rout", I can only shrug and say "it was still Bush's fault that we were there." Point 3: We completely agree "Bush could not succeed in Iraq, neither will Obama" -- but that is not an indictment of Obama because he didn't get us in there (cf. point 2 above). Point 4: I would have thought ... more intuition about historians than to say they will blame Obama more than Bush even if it were objectively true. It was Bush's folly -- even I as an ultrarightwinger can see that -- and the mainstream leftist historians will never blame Obama over Bush. It is somewhat akin mutatis mutandis to LBJ-Nixon-Vietnam. Point 5: I don't think getting out of Iraq is ever going to be seen as a mistake by the swing voters whose minds might be changed Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
