It seems that John Muhammad got his introduction to Islam via the Nation of Islam, the late Elijah Muhammad's rather idiosyncratic cult. While it is possible he shot people out of sympathy with the 9/11 hijackers, (indeed, likely given his sketches and journal), I doubt that he was truly connected with them.
