ISLAM AND DEMOCRACY---PART TWO

Reader comment on item: Analyzing the Turmoil [in Egypt]

GOOD DAY DANIEL

I did write to you last week and you published my thoughts about my rationale on this issue.

Today you come with a question with an answer to it arriving to the same conclusion: you said:

""""Islam is compatible with democracy but Islamism is not. """And you carry on in saying that :

"'Islamism is inherently antidemocratic. It demands that the sovereignty of G-d trumps the sovereignty of the popular will; that the sharia be applied, no matter what people think; These are the profoundly anti-democratic qualities of Islamism.""

What I think you have done is politicize Islam giving it a new name Islamism and finding differences betwen the two. I beg to differ. There is only one Islam to which the faithful will adhere. God is above all and no man is going to dictate a law. If democracy comes from "demos"=people and "cratos"=power, in Islam's case it is "theos"=God and "cratos"=power, thus theocracy

Yes, it is nice to consider that the Muslim world wants to join the other democracies of the world to be "in" with the rest of us, but their religion will not let them. Try to imagine all they will have to sacrifice, needless to mention, to become a democracy. Very hard

You did touch on a very important element of Islamic culture: dignity and Humiliation. Well worth talking about, but that will be for next time

Best regards Daniel
