Islamists governments influenceReader comment on item: How Many Islamists? Submitted by steveN (United States), May 21, 2012 at 23:05 With the increase of Islamists in parliaments and governments in the Middle East, resulting from the so called 'Arab Spring', we can probably expect an incremental increase in poll numbers. The question will be whether that reflects a true picture, that having Islamists in power increases the numbers of Islamists, or if ti will simply be inflated due to people's fears or recrimination. We in the west all believe that there will be a backlash, a reaction to the stringency measures and social limitations that will be placed on these societies, but it is only because we are westerners. Perhaps it will mean nothing to them, If that is the case, then the test will be later on when the lack of compatibility of Islamism with economic growth comes to bear. Even then, I remain cynically pessimistic.
