I agree that Hagel feels compelled to demonstrate his bona fides. However, once that's sufficiently accomplished, I believe that Hagel will feel empowered to treat all subsequent decision-making as per his own criteria. And, as you've pointed-out previously, his general approach to the Middle East seems to be at least somewhat opposed to the general approach of the Netanyahu government. It seems that Viscount Samuel felt permanently constrained by his birthright. In contrast, once Hagel makes some token pro-Israel comments, I suspect that his sudden "brotherhood" will melt away...
