Washington: PA doesn't need to recognize Jewish Israel

"In an interview with Jerusalem-based daily Al-Quds Saturday, State Department Spokeswoman Jen Psaki suggested that within the context of any final agreement between the two parties, Palestinian recognition of Israel will not play a critical role. She did reiterate, however, America's position that Israel is Jewish state."

Is there any wonder why Israelis see this administration as overbearing and against their interests?When met with a defiant Palestinian position, the US backs down on the key Israeli recognition demand. What was especially interesting here is the wording: In the past the issue was whether the PA needed to recognize Israel as a Jewish State before the final status negotiations begin or only at the end. Now the most important Israeli demand for peace is kicked to the curb by a coalition of Palestinians, Haaretz editors (see last week's editorial), and the Obama Administration. Whatever the democratically elected government of Israel wants is irrelevant.

And to think that the entire Oslo process started off without any promise for a Palestinian State (it was marketed in 1993 as a reversible autonomy plan), and here we are today where Israel is placed in the position of giving up the entire store without even getting peace or recognition as a Jewish State!
