I unfortunately have a grandparent who lived just feet away from the scene of one of these two incidents, and I saw a couple of things I cared not to see right afterwards, though my family is okay. I had not previously believed that Neo-Nazis and the fringe Right in this country still constituted a viable threat to anyone, and that Islamists were our only real enemy, but apparently I was wrong. Right wing zealots like the shooter in this case cannot mount a genocide against the Jewish people or anyone else today, unlike Iran and those allied with it.

So, I suppose the lesson from this despicable act is that, much as it is wrong to believe that "it can't happen here," it is foolhardy not to take bigots who advocate violence at their word. Rather than distracting from vigilance over the Iranian nuclear program, this episode ought to firmly strengthen our intent to stop it.
