The Templemount should have stayed in Jewish handsReader comment on item: Nightmare on Temple Mount Submitted by Estel Pe (Netherlands), Sep 5, 2002 at 03:31 In my opinion Moshe Dayan made a big, big mistake when he handed the keys to the El Aqsa, in fact those of the Temple Mount over to the Waqf. It was a gesture that meant as much as: "this place means more to you than it means to us." Of course that is not true, but it enabled the Muslims to make Jerusalem, that before that time was hardly important to Islam, to a symbol of their war against the Jewish state. If Muslims want to pray there, they can do so without having supervision. The enormity of that mistake was proven in the last few years, when, even before the war of terror, the artifacts of biblical times ended up on the thrash heap by the hands of the Arab laborers, out of reach of Jewish archeologists, so unexaminable and forever broken. The Israeli authorities could at least have demanded of the Waqf that every piece out of the construction site at the Stables of Salomon was examined before it was taken out, and that no construction would be possible when there were no archeologists at the site. Indeed, this was the way it was meant to be, but for fear of riots, all Jews were banned from the site. There is a war on. Destroying Jewish history is part of this war. Just as the Taliban destroyed the big Buddhas in Afganistan to deny that there ever was a non-Muslim civilization there. The same is going to happen in Israel. The Palestinians claim that the Jews have no connections with Jerusalem. The Israeli government already kept a low profile on the celebrations of 3000 years of Jewish Jerusalem, because the world leaders requested it. Soon the connection will not be visible any more, the constructors of the Waqf will have smashed the evidence up. The article from the Jerusalem Post about this practice is alarming. Not only are historical artIfacts being ground up and taken away by the tonnes, but the Southern Temple Wall is going to cave in too. Some time ago the Western Wall was compromised by leaking water, and it is bulging in places. When the tunnels from biblical times were opened, Muslims accused the Jews of trying to undermine the El Aqsa and the world rallied to support them. Now it is the turn of the Israeli government to sound the alarm. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
