This election was never about Donald Trump

Reader comment on item: Post-Election Reflections of a #NeverTrumpNorHillary Conservative

Dear Dr Pipes, If this election was ever about Donald Trump, he would have lost it on the first day. This election was about the following five or six major ideas:

1. We know that Illegal immigration is illegal and illegal is bad. Donald Trump summarized it as "if there is no border there is no nation".
2. What is going on in Islamic countries is violent and confusing. DT summarized it as "let there be no immigration from Islamic countries until we figure out what is going on". There is absolutely nothing racial about it.
3. Thoughtless application of economic principles (like 'trade is good') is idiotic. DT summarized it as "we will renegotiate all trade deals".
4. We all knew that something was not quiet right with the way Clinton Foundation was being run. We also smelled that Mrs Clinton's single-minded decades-long vision was to become the president. DT summarized it as "Crooked Hillary".
5. We know that plain Tax and Welfare cannot bring prosperity to poor and downtrodden. DT summarized it as "You have nothing to lose."
6. We are tired of the politicians that put people against the police. He summarized it as law and order. We liked when he said that 3000 annual murders in Chicago are unacceptable.
7. A lot of us still like America. He summarized it by saying, "America first".

So, this election was about ideas and voice of the people. DT gave voice to the people and people, both men and women, to a great extent decided to ignore his weaknesses. He lost by .5% of popular votes. If his past behavior with women had been good, he would have gotten 75% of the popular votes.

Those who are thinking that DT's victory is due to "uneducated rural votes" are terribly mistaken. It is about common sense.
