Reader comment on item: Two Bullies, Putin and Erdoğan, Try Friendship

Submitted by David V (Australia), Dec 25, 2016 at 22:49

Russia and Turkey under their current leadership have certain things in common. Both Putin and Erdogan cynically exploit a mixture of nationalism and religion for power, both are trying to implement a long-held dream of reclaiming long-lost ill-gotten empires, and both also promote a version of history which amounts to a denial of atrocities - Turkey denies the Armenian and Assyrian genocides, Russia denies the many crimes of the Soviet Union including the Ukrainian famine, Baltic annexation and deportations, and other instances of mass murder.
